    A whole new eco-system

Most of the windows in this house are the original ones (it's sixties-built - not exciting). This is despite the importunities of many, many double-glazing salespeople. Most notably this one, which I blogged about in a white-hot rage nearly two years ago, but which I have not forgotten - http://imogenhowson.blogspot.com/2007/09/no-i-do-not-want-new-windows.html.

Due to the lack-of-double-glazing-ness, in the winter condensation runs down inside these windows and lies in a little chilly lake on the wooden frame. And the white paint flakes off, and the wet wood ends up going sort of black and damp, and it's pretty much uncleanable cos all that happens if you try is you spread black stuff (liquidised wood?) and little paint-flakes all along the windowsill. (I refuse to acknowledge that the double-glazing salesman may have some reason for his rudeness. He was rude on purpose, and about something on which I had not asked for his input. I extend no forgiveness. None.)

Anyway, when I was dusting the sitting-room windowsill on Monday, I noticed a new interesting consequence of the whole wood/condensation/single-glazing arrangement.

I have moss growing on my window frames. Moss. On my window frames. Inside the house.

I'm torn between this distressing proof that, after all my hopes to the contrary, I am a bad housewife, and a certain amount of delight. Moss! In little tiny cushions!

And, to be honest, I kind of want to leave it. Who knows what will come next? Violets? Watercress? Pixies?

But that Imogen is not this Imogen

I usually think the nice thing about having an unusual name is that (once you've left school and those funny, funny people who thought it was oh so witty to call you Imagine and sing that tedious John Lennon song) if you Google your name you find that page after page is All About You.

It's not exactly helping me become famous just yet, but at least, in my obscure corner of the web, I'm not fighting off lots of other Imogen Howsons - or even any other Imogens.

However, having an unusual name also means that when another Imogen does turn up, people will assume it's you.

Which in turn means that, when another Imogen writes Twilight fan fiction, the friend of your daughter who discovered it on the net won't check the surname before informing your daughter that she's found a story by you.

Well, I've Googled it and I assume the other Imogen is either the one who's part of the staff at Twilight Lexicon, or a Rosalie-Imogen-Hale who writes at Fanfiction.net.

There's also an Imogen Howe who wrote a book called Fatal Attraction in an eighties-published series called Twilight (hm, not feeling quite so unique now. Imogen Howe, bah). But, not being fan fiction, I'm thinking that's not it.

Anyway. If you're looking for Twilight fan fiction, or indeed any kind of fan fiction, ImogenHowson.com is not the place to start. Honestly. I promise.

Who has won a copy of StereoOpticon...?

Val Kovalin from Obsidian Bookshelf jumped out of the random draw to win a copy of StereoOpticon, the new fairy tale anthology from Drollerie Press.

Email me, Val, on immihowson AT btinternet DOT com and let me know which format you'd prefer, and I'll get it sent over to you.

Thanks for entering, everyone who did! Come back another time (not sure when, but I'll keep you posted) for a chance to win the print version.

    Falling moves into shared accomodation

Falling, my first ever book with Drollerie Press - and my debut release - is now no longer available by itself (I know, how sad is that? I can't quite bear to take down its cover art from my website yet!). Instead, you can buy it as part of StereoOpticon, an anthology of re-written or re-imagined or completely original fairy tales from Drollerie Press.

I have one copy of the electronic version to give away, in multiple formats . If you'd like to win it, post in the comments section (or if you're reading this on Facebook, post on my wall) telling me which fairy tale you'd most like to see re-written. I'll draw the winner in a week's time (on Easter Sunday!) and email your book to you.

I know not everyone has a dedicated e-reader so plenty of people aren't fans of ebooks. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, or a Nintendo DS, you can treat that as an e-reader. All right, so not everyone has an iPhone or DS, either...

I'm not sure when the print version will be out, but there will be an even Bigger, Better Contest to celebrate the print release, so stay tuned!

    Pop culture references R us

My nearly-thirteen-year-old came into the house singing, "I come from the imagination, and I'm here strictly by your invocation..."

The sign, I feel, of a thoroughly well-rounded education.
